Students Hostel Etiquette: Do’s and Don’ts

One of the coolest things about hostels is that they draw a diverse range of humans. You never know who you are going to bump in with. But that can often be a bad thing too. Related:  We personally encounter every type of backpacker who thinks that having booked 10 rooms means they are to sleep alone there. Or that their mom will pick up after them in the hostel kitchen. And yet, We are constantly surprised by the students hostel etiquette of – not keeping their plates at the designated place but trying to sneak out or coming back fighting with their fellow students and then constantly complaining. Sometimes, we feel there should be a course on students hostel etiquette. Which means people remember you as all-around amazing and not the a-hole that comes to the hostel drunk at 3 AM.

After years of being in the hostel business, this is some hostel etiquette tips to make your fellow students not hate you:

Be Quiet

People are not going to expect you to creep through the room during the day when someone else is napping. Basically, the day-time rule in students hostel etiquette is that throughout most of the daytime hours and into early evening people expect that your dorm room could be used for studying / hanging out. But no noise, after 10 or 11 PM, People are trying to sleep! It makes perfect sense, you sleep in a dorm room and party elsewhere! There is nothing more uncool than overly chatty people waking other ones in the middle of the night. If you need to speak, go out the door and do it outside!

People understand that when you are in a large dorm, perfect silence is impossible. Those are the reasons that all of us carry earplugs, so we should respect each other’s space and be quiet where we can.

Keep the Lights Off

In students hostel etiquette, keeping the lights off or dimmed at night is important to avoid disturbing others who are sleeping. Use personal lights or phone flashlights if needed. Respecting quiet hours includes limiting bright lights, ensuring everyone gets restful sleep.

Don’t Eat in the Rooms

Some foods smell strong and attract bugs. It’s best to eat in the common area or dining room.

Use Headphones

Watching movies or chatting on the phone? Use headphones so others don’t hear everything. And if you need to make a call without headphones, go to the common area or the hallway during the day or the night time.

Keep the Mess Area Clean

Nobody wants to get sick due to bad hygiene, right? Keep the dirty plates at a designated spot. If the pan feels sticky, it’s not clean! Handover to the UniLiv staff, they will help you out with the cleaning. Do not leave plates at the table. Make sure you do not leave the water running. Do not spill or waste the food, eat as much as you can. Be kind and leave the kitchen neat!

Keep the Bathrooms Clean

At UniLiv, we believe shared spaces should feel just as clean and comfortable as your own home. I’m sure you wouldn’t leave your bathroom dirty – so why do it in the hostel? How many hostel bathrooms have you entered, only to feel disgusted? Too many, right? That’s the feeling others get when they walk into a mess left behind.

UniLiv ensures a deep cleaning of your bathrooms with regular cleaning services, all you need to do is maintain the hygiene in the bathroom.

Pack your Stuff the Night Before

It’s hard to sleep when people pack their bags in the morning. If you need to leave early, pack your things the night before. That way, you don’t make too much noise while others are still sleeping, respecting students hostel etiquette.

Keep Things Private

Don’t do anything inappropriate in the dorm room. People need their space, and no one wants to walk in on something awkward. Be thoughtful and find the right place for personal moments.

Turn Down the Music

Music is fun, but not when people are trying to sleep! Keep it low, so everyone can rest. Save the party for the daytime, as it aligns with students hostel etiquette.

Share the Outlets

If there aren’t many plugs, don’t take more than one. Everyone needs to charge their phone and devices, just like you! Be fair and share.

Be Mindful when Washing clothes

If you wash your clothes, be considerate and hang them only on your part — not all over the washing area. Everyone has laundry to do, and it’s important not to take up too much space. Keeping the area tidy helps everyone feel more comfortable in the shared living environment.

Don’t Eat People’s Food

Don’t eat or drink things that aren’t yours – it’s simply not cool! If the hostel has a shared shelf for food, feel free to take it from there. However, avoid taking anyone else’s from the fridge. Respecting others belongings fosters a positive atmosphere.

Conclusion

Remember, just like in school, it’s important to be kind and respect others. Everyone has different needs, and we all share the space. When you play nice, everyone has a better time! Following these simple rules is key to students hostel etiquette and ensures a positive living environment for all.
